Lesson One - Tuning In Focus Question: What is recycling?
- Discuss prior knowledge
- Watch a recyling advertisement and discuss as a class why recycling is important
- Brainstorm word related to recycling
Lesson Two - Deciding Direction Focus Question: What do we want to learn?
- Revisit ideas from lesson one
- Read the book "We are extremely good recyclers" as a whole class
- Using the book as a refence discuss with students what they want to learn about during this unit
- Discuss with students the three bins they should have at home with particular emphasis on the Recycling Bin
- Students to discuss and then draw the perfect recycling bin
Lesson Three - Organising Ourselves Focus Question: How will we develop a successful recycling system in the classroom?
- Class discussion on the possible roles that could be introduced in the classroom to assist in recycling
- Introduction of four bin monitoring jobs
- Developement of a class roster
- Art activity using recycled materials
Lesson Four - Finding Out Focus Question: What topic do we want to investigate further?
- In pairs students discuss what they know about recycling so far
- Students chose one of four topics to choose from and complete an activity based on the chosen topic
Lesson Five - Sorting Out Focus Question: What is the schools recycling policy?
- Students catergorise types of litter based on their litter audit
- Tally results from all groups and develop a pictoraph graph
- In groups students present their results to the class
Lesson Six - Drawing Conclusions Focus Question: What is an anti littering campaign?
- Class discussion about anti littering campaigns (What are they, examples of some, does the school have one)
- Students develop a dance as part of their anti littering campaign to perform at school assembly Lesson Seven - Considering Social Action Focus Question: How can we use our knowledge?
- Students to each design an anti littering poster for a whole school campaign to reduce littering Lesson Eight - Reflection and Evaluation Focus Question: What did we learn?
- Students will develop a personal pledge to continue recycling based on what they have learned
